I love fireflies very much ever since I watched an animation called “Grave of the Fireflies”.

Fireflies are beetles. There are about 2,000 species of fireflies in different parts of the world. You can find them in humid areas in Asia and the Americas as they love warm and wet environments.I once saw them in Sabah. It was amazing to see thousands of fireflies blinking like the stars in the sky!

Fireflies create a chemical reaction in their bodies that allows them to light up. Each blinking pattern is unique and helps fireflies find potential mates. The light is also a warning to other predators. I went on a boat tour to see the fireflies last Christmas. The tour guides used the torch light to attract the fireflies to fly near us and hold them using the palm of their hands. It was surprising to see the little creatures shines so bright in the dark. God’s creation is really wonderful!

The life span of fireflies is very short. Adult fireflies live for about two months. They search mates in their whole life and performing for us before laying eggs and dying. They inspires me that although our life on earth is short, we should try our best to live it to the fullest and shine bright to let others see God.

Miss Crystal

When I studied in Australia, I travelled around this beautiful country. In one of the trips, I joined a bushwalking tour in Tasmania. In the walk I found something strange and cute next to my foot. The tour guide told me that they were wombats’ poop!

Wombats are short-legged native Australian animal. They can dig extensive burrow systems. Wombats have pouch just like kangaroos. But the wombats’ pouch opens toward the mother’s rear, rather than toward her head, so when they dig they do not gather soil in their pouch. Wombats can live for 15 years in wild. They can live in zoos for 20-30 years. Wombat produces about 80 to 100 cubes of poop each night. Scientists found that wombats have really strong sense of smell, so the smell of their poop indicates who’s in the area. The cubed shape of the poop is also thought to be less likely to roll away. Wombats are the only animals in the world that produce cube-shaped poop.

Apart from the interesting facts about their poop, wombats look cute and cuddly! I really like this lovable little creature! If you get a chance to go to Australia, you must visit them!
